Sanskrit Grammarian
(Approximately 6-4 BCE)
Panini is known for his Sanskrit grammar, particularly for his formulation of the 3959 Sanskrit Syntax and grammar known as Ashtadyayi. Paninini’s grammar is the world’s first system, developed well before the 19 century innovations of Gottlab Frege and the subsequent development of Mathematical logic. In designing his grammar, Panini used the method of auxiliary symbols’, in which new affixes are designated to mark syntactic categories and the control of grammatical derivations. This technique, rediscovered by the logician Email Post, became a standard method in the design of computer programming languages.
